• Hey everybody!

It’s good to be back writing, getting in the swing of things again and actually having P4SC after two weeks off due to inclement weather. Although we didn’t have classes, I’ve still been working on stuff including social media, some pr work and the majority of my work… the website.

This week was in my opinion, the best one yet. We started things off this week with a trip to Bethesda again. We met with Jason Miller, associate director of social services and he gave us a presentation on homelessness in the U.S. Surprisingly I picked up on a lot of the things he was presenting and could easily relate them to things I knew about. Overall his presentation had a lot of facts and figures and we also delved in to a little bit of history of homelessness in Philadelphia, which was interesting. Like I said in my video diary, the main thing I took away from Jason’s presentation was, “Shelter isn’t a long-term solution.” I think that is such an important message and goal for anybody working in the industry. Eventually we need to evolve from shelters. After his presentation, I got some fashion tips (he had a nice ensemble on!) and we took a group picture and were on our way to YES.

 • We had a sizable group at YES this week, which I was not expecting walking in the door. There were many new faces, but also some old faces from our first visit, which was good to see. Since there were some new pals, we decided to do another group introduction and project overview. Some of the friends from YES were shy to introduce themselves, but eventually opened up a bit when we took out the cameras. It was great to see them willing after a bit of a lengthy discussion.

 • We then broke off to work with individuals and I was quick to choose one of the girls I recognized from the previous week. I explained to her how since I was using a Nikon, things might be a little different when somebody else shows them to her on a Canon but if you recognize the terms, you’ll be a-okay. Since my partner was here the week before, I reviewed with her a bit of the basics, but then showed her ways to see things more creatively and treating your eyes like a lens of their own. I showed her low angles, high angles and a bit of texture/pattern identification.
Amy was clearly teaching her partner a lot. Not!

Overall it was a great week and I’m looking forward to getting back to work with them next week. Hopefully it will be a tad bit warmer so we can explore the neighborhood around YES!
